WHAT IS MOLD?

Mold is a microscopic organism present virtually everywhere, indoors and outdoors. Molds are fungi that are needed to break down dead plant and animal materials in the outdoor environment, but can become problematic when there is active mold growth indoors. For mold to grow in an indoor environment it only needs a food source (paper, wood, wallboard, carpet materials, etc.) and a moisture source (elevated relative humidity, flood, plumbing leak, poor ventilation, etc.). When there is active mold growth indoors and goes untreated, there is the potential that whomever occupies the indoor space will be exposed to elevated mold levels, will become sensitized and develop allergies to the mold.   ​

THE REMEDIATION PROCESS

McDonough Environmental Services, Inc. (MES) of North Attleboro, Massachusetts will provide mold removal and mold remediation services by establishing environmental controls to contain the mold contaminated areas from the unaffected areas of the property. As mold is disturbed it will become airborne and can cross contaminate the unaffected areas if the containment isn't properly designed and constructed. The containment will be constructed using a 6 mil. poly sheeting at the entrance of the containment and a decontamination chamber. A HEPA filtered negative air machine will be utilized to exhaust air outside of the containment creating a negative pressure inside the work area. This negative pressure is essential to prevent mold from drafting from the containment during the cleaning process. HEPA filtered air scrubbers will also be used to change and clean the air during the cleaning process. Once the containment has been completed, MES specialists will enter the containment, turn on the equipment and begin removing the affected customer belongings. Most non-porous hard surfaced belongings can be cleaned. Porous belongings may be cleaned depending on the level of contamination. If porous belongings cannot be cleaned they should be discarded. Once the containment has been emptied of its belongings, the mold contaminated, non-structural building materials (wallboard, carpet materials, insulation, etc.) will be removed where necessary. This is commonly determined from a third party mold inspection company that is retained by the property owner. The mold inspection company will evaluate the property, develop a scope of work for mold remediation and make recommendations on how to prevent future water issues. Surfaces behind removed materials will then be sanded,scrubbed, wire brushed, and/or dry ice blasted to remove surface mold from remaining structural building materials. Once mold has been removed from the containment all surfaces will then be HEPA vacuumed and sanitized. HEPA filtered air scrubbers will continue to run for up to 48 hours once the remediation has been completed. It is highly recommended to have a third party mold inspection company perform post remediation/clearance testing to confirm that the project was successful.  ​
